For this task I am analysing the genre of opening scenes from films using the acronym 'Distinct'. This acronym has different components on how to analysis these film opening and I will use this to make sure my analysis is in depth and covers many aspects of the genre of each film opening.
Opening Scene: Harry Brown
The genre of the film, Harry Brown, from the opening of the film is Youth and action. This is the opening scene of the film Harry Brown. This film shows lives of the youth in London, England in the modern time. It shows how the youth were involved in gangs and violence and the use of drugs. The setting is in South London, starting off in an underpass. then shortly after the setting is in a local park in the daytime with two characters riding a motorbike in the park. This shows the Genre from the setting as a mystery as in the underpass it was dark so not much could be seen apart from the characters doing drugs. Also as violence as the characters on the motorbike have a gun and are shooting. The themes from this opening of Harry Brown is youth as the characters in the opening scene are teenagers/young men. Also the themes are gang and violence as a gun is used and gang as there is a group of them doing drugs and are all in it together showing a gang. The gun can be seen as a main icon as it shows power and intention to enforce harm and violence which is a main theme of the film.
The use of the handheld camera when two characters were on the motorbike entices the audience to be seem apart of the action as when viewing it shows viewing the scene in the eyes of the character on the motorbike. This makes the audience feel apart of the film also making the audience concentrate more on the film from the outset from this opening scene.
The clothing of the hoodies and black/dark clothing shows that the violence and crime from the characters as the clothing represents the darkness of their behavior and intentions. Also the dark clothing shows that the characters want to be hidden to hide themselves from trouble as a result of being in a gang and using violence.
Opening Scene: Ghost Ship
The genre of the film, Ghost Ship, from the opening of the film is horror. This is because the setting is during night time on a ship in the middle of the ocean so no one from outside the ship can access the ship showing no help can be found. The characters in the opening scene are of upper class, and are all adults apart from one child that is central to the opening scene. An icon to show that it is horror is the wire that is used to cut through all the people as it shows this is the used to show the horror of killing all the people in this scene on the ship.
The sound shows this is a horror as at the beginning of the scene when it is upbeat and no sign of what is going to happen the sound is lively, upbeat music however, the sound then changes to show horror as the music stops and the sound from the wire is used such as the crashing and breaking of objects to show something bad is happening.
The camera angles used show it is horror as once the killing of the people has happened close ups are shown to show the horrific killings and how shocking they as you can then see dead bodies covered in blood as the camera shows a full shot of all the dead bodies to show how many casualties and the horrific results of what happened. This shows it is a horror as it was all planned to kill the people on the ship.
