Film Language

Film Language

For this task I analysed these film openings for all what i have learnt to this point. Each clip I have targeted a specific feature used. I used acronyms for each section I looked at.

Camera- FAM (frame, angle, movement)
Mise en scene- CLAMPS ( Costume, Lighting, Actors-Class /Age /Gender / Sexuality / Ethnicity/Body language, Makeup, Props, Setting)
Sound- MCDOVED
Editing- STOPS (screen time, transitions, order of narrative, pace, special effects)

Boyz in da hood

For this opening scene I analysed camera, sound, editing and mise en scene. It starts of with a black screen with white writing says 2 facts. one faded out then the next one comes in then the next one fades out then goes to a red stop sign.
Then it goes to a hand held shot slowly getting closer to a big red stop sign from and long shout to and extreme close up. It is a slit low worm eyes view angle but pretty much normal angle. It is a cloudy grey day beyond the sign.
It goes to a steady cam of a boy waiting on the path. A longshot and a normal angle view from across the road.
It starts to move as a tracking shot still a long shot. The by that is waiting starts to walk as his friends are coming across then road. All of them walk off and the camera starts to move with them.
Then its goes to a medium long shot cutting off at the knees. It is still tracking with them.
One of the boys turns as then the camera goes to a medium shot of him then turns to the rest of the friends still a medium shot and a steady cam. it does this 4 times then cuts to a one way street sign.
The sign is viewed from a birds eye view angle and it tilts down.

UP

Time passing shown in this film is shown in two ways. One way time passing is shown is the use of Carl doing his ties everyday before work and then while each tie is tied this shows the passing of time as at the beginning of the sequence they are young while at the end of this sequence the couple are both old through their aging appearance shown. Another way time is shown passing is both the couple at work. They first work together at the zoo at the beginning of their relationship and the balloons always rise and start to lift off the ground. However, time passing is shown through this as at the end when they are old Carl already knows the balloons are going to lift off the ground and stops them without looking. This shows time passing as it shows the couple have been working their for a long time throughout their lives together.

Audience

Questions
Who Creates what we watch?
The producer creates what we watch as they are behind all the films that are made. These are called 'gatekeepers'. what is made is what the audience sees and only the 'gatekeepers' can create this as they are behind the scenes creating what we see.

Can the media exist without audience?
No as there would be no point for the media as it would have nothing to interest or influence so responses to the media would be non existence. Also without the audience the media would have no one to view the media so therefore would have no point existing.

Can the audience exist without the media?
No as the audience would have nothing to be influenced by or would have nothing to feed on so the audience for the media would not be able to exist without the media. However some may say it can exist as the audience should not be influenced by the media.

Who is the more powerful, media or audience?
I would say audience. This is because without audience, media cannot affect anyone/anything and that without audience the media is pointless and has no reason. However, media can affect the audiences thoughts or choices so can still be thought as powerful as it can inform and influence the audience.

Can the media control the audience?
Yes as the audience could be intoxicated by the media so therefore the media will be able to control the audience as the audience listen a lot to the media and what they say. Also the media can control the audience as the media can influence on opinion and choices of the audience so can show control of the audience by the media.

Narrative Task: Film opening

Film opening:UP

For this task I had to analyse a film scene using the techniques. One of these is Barthes' three codes, Actions, Symbols and Inigma. Also Aristotle's theory of simply having a beginning, middle and ending. Todorov's theory of each narrative passes five stages and has equilibriums. And finally Levi-Strauss' theory of binary opposites.
I am analysing a scene from the film UP.

A narrative that is shown from Todorov's theory is that the scene starts with a new equilibrium of the couple moving in and starting a life together. Then Todorov's theory is shown as there is different stages and many disturbed equilibriums which sets them back on there dream. The disturbed equilibriums are firstly when the couple cant have a baby and the shortly fallowed by a series of disturbed equilibriums when they start to save for there dream. these are, when the car tyre bursts so they have to use the money they are saving to fix the tyre, then the house is destroyed by a storm and falling tree and finally when he breaks his leg. these are all setbacks and disturbed equilibrium. Additionally, the final disturbed equilibrium which destroys the dream completely is when she passes away. This then starts a new equilibrium of that he now have to live without her.

A narrative that is shown from Aristotle's theory is that it starts with them becoming married and starting a life together. The middle is the life they go through together and how they grow old together. Then the end is when there life together ends when she passes away leaving him alone.

One of Barthes' codes, symbols, are used throughout the clip. One symbol is when the couple are watching and the clouds are babies showing that they want to have children but this ends up that they cannot have children.
Another narrative technique is Levi-Strauss' binary opposites theory. These are you throughout this scene. One way they are used is the two characters have opposite personalities as Ellie is creative and adventurous while Carl is more one dimensional and is reserved. Another binary opposite is at the beginning of the scene Carl struggles to get up the hill where they picnic while they are young whereas at the end of the scene when they are old ellie struggles to get up the hill using binary opposites.

Representation: Film Clip

Legally Blonde

To analyse this task i am using the 4 W's. These are Who, What, Where and Why. I used this as this will analyse the clip in detail and cover what i am analysing which is representation.

The stereotype that is used in this scene and the whole film is the typical dumb blonde girl. In this scenes it shows this by using shots such as the girl brushing her hair showing these stereotypical blonde girls only care about how they look and are labelled as 'Barbie dolls'. Being represented is the typical american teenage girl who is blonde and dumb. The preferred audience will be teenage girls as they are similar to the girls in the film however, the gatekeepers choose to make the stereotype even worse than it actually is, so the audience will realise how much worse the stereotype actually is.

The activities shown that the girl is doing to show the stereotype is activities such as brushing her hair, and working out to show the stereotype that 'blondes' only care what they look like and to attract guys who play American Football at school. In this film they are represented to there stereotype very well and even enhanced a lot to clearly show the stereotype of a teenage 'dumb blonde' .

The purpose that the stereotype serves is that this is to show what teenage girls can be like and how they would only care on there appearance and not education or their future.

As this stereotype is of a teenage 'dumb blonde' the location which is seen in the clip is that they would be at high school due to their age and also places such as shops as they are shopping to make sure they look their best or the gym as they would be working out to also show how much they care about their looks and want to impress guys and be popular and be known by everyone. The location is normal for American teens however it can be enhanced as the girls would not spend their whole lives at for example a shopping centre and shops.

Semiotics Analysis

Avengers

  • A denotation of the characters in the poster show it is a superhero film as they are brightly coloured in there uniforms in contrast to the background of the burning and destroyed city which is very dark and dull. This also highlights the characters to show they have an important role in the film and the film plot heavily involves all the characters shown.
  • A denotation of the poster is that there is destruction showing there is violence in this film and that there is fighting and showing power is a big development throughout the film. This denotation could be developed and connotations could be that there could be good vs. evil as the destruction shows there is evil trying to destroy and harm the innocent.
  • A denotation is that we can see that from certain characters this film is fictional and made of superhuman characters, however a connotation we can develop from this is that it includes humans and is on earth as the city in the background is a city in this world.
  • A connotation we can understand is that there is aerial battle that takes place as damage to the tall building in the background and the aircraft's fighting show that the battles and fighting is high up due to the superhuman powers of the characters.
  • A connotation we can understand from the film poster is the leader of the group of characters in Iron Man. This is because he is at the front of the group and that he is in the centre of the poster and the first thing that catches your eye when you first look at the film poster.
  • A denotation is that from the title of the film is that it stands out and is bold in the centre and that as it is a light colour it contrasts to the film poster to stand out clearly and be clearly seen. This can be developed into a connotation showing the title of the film represents the characters on the film poster as it is coloured brightly contrasting to the dull dark background and represents the characters who are seen boldly as they stand out like the title.

Genre Task 2 - Film Opening 'Distinct'

For this task I am analysing the genre of opening scenes from films using the acronym 'Distinct'. This acronym has different components on how to analysis these film opening and I will use this to make sure my analysis is in depth and covers many aspects of the genre of each film opening.

Opening Scene: Harry Brown

The genre of the film, Harry Brown, from the opening of the film is Youth and action. This is the opening scene of the film Harry Brown. This film shows lives of the youth in London, England in the modern time. It shows how the youth were involved in gangs and violence and the use of drugs. The setting is in South London, starting off in an underpass. then shortly after the setting is in a local park in the daytime with two characters riding a motorbike in the park. This shows the Genre from the setting as a mystery as in the underpass it was dark so not much could be seen apart from the characters doing drugs. Also as violence as the characters on the motorbike have a gun and are shooting. The themes from this opening of Harry Brown is youth as the characters in the opening scene are teenagers/young men. Also the themes are gang and violence as a gun is used and gang as there is a group of them doing drugs and are all in it together showing a gang. The gun can be seen as a main icon as it shows power and intention to enforce harm and violence which is a main theme of the film.
The use of the handheld camera when two characters were on the motorbike entices the audience to be seem apart of the action as when viewing it shows viewing the scene in the eyes of the character on the motorbike. This makes the audience feel apart of the film also making the audience concentrate more on the film from the outset from this opening scene.
The clothing of the hoodies and black/dark clothing shows that the violence and crime from the characters as the clothing represents the darkness of their behavior and intentions. Also the dark clothing shows that the characters want to be hidden to hide themselves from trouble as a result of being in a gang and using violence.

Opening Scene: Ghost Ship

The genre of the film, Ghost Ship, from the opening of the film is horror. This is because the setting is during night time on a ship in the middle of the ocean so no one from outside the ship can access the ship showing no help can be found. The characters in the opening scene are of upper class, and are all adults apart from one child that is central to the opening scene. An icon to show that it is horror is the wire that is used to cut through all the people as it shows this is the used to show the horror of killing all the people in this scene on the ship.
The sound shows this is a horror as at the beginning of the scene when it is upbeat and no sign of what is going to happen the sound is lively, upbeat music however, the sound then changes to show horror as the music stops and the sound from the wire is used such as the crashing and breaking of objects to show something bad is happening.
The camera angles used show it is horror as once the killing of the people has happened close ups are shown to show the horrific killings and how shocking they as you can then see dead bodies covered in blood as the camera shows a full shot of all the dead bodies to show how many casualties and the horrific results of what happened. This shows it is a horror as it was all planned to kill the people on the ship.

Genre Task 1 - group photo task

Film Genre Photos

Thriller
This photo represents the film genre 'Thriller'. I used this photo for the genre Thriller as it shows uncertainty as you cannot see the full face the person holding the gun so it is hard to see who is holding the gun to show this is a Thriller. Also the use of a weapon shows it is a Thriller as this can be interpreted that weapons are used and that the adrenalin of the film will be high to show the film as a thriller.

Mystery
This photo represents mystery as you cannot see the face of the person in the picture. Also as the character is wearing a bodysuit to hide everything about the character and its physical features to show this genre as mystery. Also as the character on the flour is covered in leaves to hide its face shows a mystery as none of the characters in the image can be identified.
